Apparently the grass is greener where the other half lives.
A few years ago, my home town of Brisbane was going through a serious drought. Everyone began having two-minutes-or-less showers, some people shared bath water and we all started seriously considering not flushing for number ones.
But then some people started getting greedy. They would sneak out of the house in the early hours of the morning, armed with a bucket and a hose and start washing their car, or turn their sprinklers on outside of the designated sprinkler times. Those of us with dead, brown grass would stand at our windows and shame our neighbours with green lawns, and rightfully so.
Los Angeles is going through a huge drought right now, but the rich celebrities who can afford to waste water couldn’t give a shit.
In recent weeks, owners of dead lawns have been blowing up social media with the green grass of Los Angeles and – no surprises here – celebrities are the worst offenders.
There’s Sean Penn, with grass as green as all the dollar bills he made from I Am Sam.
There’s Kanye and Kim, whose sprinklers are probably on more than the couple are home.
And if you weren’t upset enough over Sean Penn being a serial water waster, Barbra Streisand is just as bad. Check out her ridiculous green.
California has been in a pretty serious drought for four years – but you wouldn’t know it looking at these photos. And while it’s easy to point the finger at celebrities with their luscious green grass and their water slides (we’re guessing), how many of the people doing the drought-shaming aren’t secretly taking super long baths in between shame sessions?
Luckily for the Sean Penns and the Kimyes of the world, the maximum penalty for wasting water is only $10,000. I think they can afford it.
As for #DroughtShaming? I’m all for it. The celebrities will be okay – their egos can be comforted by their beautiful green lawns and their jumbo-sized bottles of water.
