The new Queen of Spain is a just little bit scandalous.

Europe has a very photogenic new King and Queen – Kate, take notes.

There is a new King and Queen to curtsy to – and they’re gorgeous. The Crown Prince of Spain became King Felipe VI today after his father, King Juan Carlos, signed his own abdication.

And with a new King, there is a new Queen. Princess Letizia, who has previously said to be Spain’s Kate Middleton, is now Queen Letizia. Or to her best friends, Queen Leti.

Thousands gathered to welcome in the new King and Queen with their adorable little princess daughters, Princess Leonor (8-year-old) and Princess Sofia (7-year-old), who behaved very well (wouldn’t expect anything less from princesses) during the ceremony.

While we were all hoping for crowns, tiaras and ball gowns. Queen Letizia chose a pastel, crystal-embellished coat by her favourite designer Felipe Varela. And as far as tiaras went, the closest we got was Sofia’s dragon-fly headband. The reason for the low key outfits – a nod to Spain’s economic recovery. The People’s Queen already.

Before becoming a Princess, and now a Queen, Letizia was just a regular person like us (in royal speak, a commoner). Before saying “I do” to becoming Spain’s Princess, she was a journalist. And she had an impressive career where she reported on 9/11 and covered the Iraq War. She also was married before meeting the Prince in 2002 (shock, horror!). Letizia reportedly shops at the supermarket and is a big fan of Spanish high street fashion such as Zara and Mango.

Spain is hoping King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will bring a new era of the Spanish royal family, and in his speech, the King called for “a new Spain that we will build together”.
