Understandably, fans critiqued the star for her culturally insensitive outfit.

In a message on Twitter, Hilary has admitted that her costume idea was "not properly thought through".

Duff's boyfriend also wrote on Instagram that he meant "no disrespect" with his costume.

While most fans were happy with the couple's remorse over their costume choice, others refused to believe they were unaware at the offence they would cause.

"That costume was lame and a bad decision. I don't honestly believe that a grown man doesn't realise what is and isn't offensive," wrote one on Jason's Instagram.

"Maybe now you should take it upon yourself to learn the history of native Americans."
