"Roaching" is the new dating trend that nobody wanted.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to the first season of The Mindy Project (don’t worry if you haven’t seen it; I’ll explain the details).

After the main character, Mindy Lahiri, felt like she had finally found a guy who ticked all her boxes (handsome, respectful, successful), he dropped a little bombshell.

“We’re not exclusive, are we?”

To which Mindy looked something like:

Needless to say, Mindy eventually dumped this guy Josh after his other girlfriend crashed one of her parties.

Way back in 2012, we didn’t have a word to describe the people like Josh.

They were just… well… you can guess what we called these guys.

However, many years later, AskMen has coined a term for the Joshes of the world: roaches. Much like the cockroach, actually.

Don’t be fooled and think that a roach is just any person who isn’t 100% monogamous after the first date.

No, no, no.

A roach is someone who scurries into your heart, you begin to see them multiple times a week, there’re hints of the ‘L Word’, you may even be introduced to friends, and then they drop the big one:

“Oh, I actually can’t do Friday night because I’m taking Alannah to a movie.”

And, Alannah, isn’t their sister. Alannah is just another version of you.

The same Alannah who has been feeling all the same feelings as you. The Alannah who will probably find out about you as well sometime soon. And, she may crash your birthday party, much like Josh’s other girlfriend in The Mindy Project.

So, you may ask… how come the name roach?

As I hinted earlier, it sounds an awful lot like ‘cockroach’ because when you find one…there’s dozens more lurking. And probably out of plain sight too.

A.K.A. Once you find Alannah, there will be a Billy, a Sarah, a Priya, all being roached, too.

Remember: The only way to kill a roacher is to ask the ultimate question:

“Are we exclusive?”
