Jennifer Lawrence is one step ahead of her own backlash.

Jennifer Lawrence did it again. She tripped. On the red carpet.

Only this time, the world didn’t want to kiss the ground her clumsy feet walked on. They didn’t even make a GIF. Everyone just rolled their eyes, as if to say ‘Really, Jennifer? Again? Girlfriend, get your shit together.’

And that’s because J-Law is about five minutes away from a full-blown Anne Hathaway-style backlash. She’s reached peak lovability. She’s attained Beyonce-level fame and now she doesn’t know what to do with it.

Except wait for the haters to overtake the devotees….

The 23-year-old actress just told Marie Claire magazine that her celebrity approval rating is slipping and she knows it.

“Honestly, I’m just doing my best. But if people want to start the backlash, I’m the captain of that team. As much as you hate me, I’m ten steps ahead of you.”

And she doesn’t stop there. She reveals just how self-aware she is with this next quote.

“I’m way too annoying because I get on red carpets and I’m really hyper, most likely because I’ve been drinking, and I can’t not photobomb somebody if it’s a good opportunity. It’s something I always tell myself: ‘You need to calm the [bleep] down. You don’t want to constantly be a GIF.’”

Yep, Jennifer knows the cute, quirky, klutzy routine can’t go on forever. You fall on the red carpet once and you’re a hit. A second time and you’re damn right adorable. A third time and the world collectively shrugs. A fourth? You’re just desperate for attention.

J-Law’s an Academy Award winning actress with exceptional range and several multi-million-dollar franchises on her CV (Hunger Games and X Men). But the red carpet is really her heartland; it’s always been the venue for her popularity contest.

But the truth is this. There’s an expiry date on popularity for women in Hollywood and Jennifer’s checking her watch, expecting it to come any minute now. And just you look, it will.

Jennifer won her popularity being a novelty in the movie business and by their very definition, novelties can’t last forever. She may have inspired other young actresses to be more authentic – Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley – but it will be at the cost of her own idolisation.

Now, you should know that I have a superhuman level of endurance when it comes to loving celebrities, so my personal Jennifer Lawrence backlash may never come. My loyalty to Britney Spears has survived worse backlashes than this one, so J-Law will likely remain smack-bang in the middle of my heart for years to come.

But I’m brave enough to see that public opinion is turning against my main girl Jennifer.

And she’s watching it happen with her eyes wide open.
