Kyle Sandilands unleashes emotional on-air breakdown, saying he's not cheating listeners.

We’re used to hearing a certain kind of Kyle Sandilands.

The straight-talking, no-filter shock jock with the controversial opinions and headline-grabbing sound bites.

But this morning, KIIS FM listeners heard a different side.

His voice trembling with emotion, Sandilands launched a scathing attack on media outlets that had accused KIIS FM of its cheating listeners by re-running old segments without any explanation.

So this morning, he decided to offer one, to stifle the speculation and put an end to the “outright lies” being peddled by the press.

"Over the past few weeks I have had a couple of days off," he said on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"I haven’t been feeling that well, and it goes on and off, some days good, some days not good. But the truth is, you know, I think I'm still trying to deal with the death of my dad - and I just wanted to keep it private, but I've gotta put it out there now.”

Sandilands' father, Peter, passed away in March after a battle with liver and bowel cancer, just as the pair had begun to mend their difficult relationship.

“We weren't super close early in my life, but over the last few years we got close and it was a nice relationship, and you know, I've been thinking about him a lot,” said Sandilands.

In his on-air defence, Sandilands specifically mentioned an article which ran yesterday on news.com.au outlining how Kyle's last-minute absences were "becoming and increasing issue for listeners".

The KIIS FM host said that the report had left him annoyed, and that he was forced to remind himself not be ashamed of taking time off to grieve his late father.

“I've gotta come on here everyday, which I love, but some days I just can’t do the fun, do you know what I mean?” he said.

“As anyone would know who’s lost someone close to them, it’s tough, anyone would know who’s dealt with death, you have good days and bad days. You do miss them.”
