Here's why you should be excited about the Labyrinth remake.

In the wake of a legend’s passing, David Bowie‘s iconic role in Labyrinth is set to be re-imagined for modern audiences.

A remake of the 1986 cult classic that put Jennifer Connelly on the map has been confirmed between TriStar Pictures and the Jim Henson Company.

For those of you playing at home, the film’s original story follows a young girl, Sarah (played by a very young Jennifer Connelly), on a quest to save her baby brother after he was stolen away into a magical land by the powerful and mysterious Goblin King Jareth, performed by the spectacular David Bowie.

Understandably, fans are nervous about Hollywood taking another shot at the fantastical masterpiece.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Maybe, but there are more than a few reasons to feel optimistic about this remake. Here’s why:

This is a chance for an entirely new generation to relive the magic we grew up with.

In an increasingly digitized world of kids spending mindless hours on video games and dull television programs, why shouldn’t we get excited about allowing younger generations to go into imagination over-drive?

The Labyrinth fantasy world of goblins and crazy creatures and their dreams coming to life is the prefect recipe to inspire creativity in young minds.

Labyrinth created a fantasy-land for it’s young viewers in it’s day that lasted months and years after children had left the cinema or rewound the VHS tape.

There is so much wonder for young audiences to discover in a refreshed context. Now our children, our younger cousins, siblings etcetera can immerse themselves in the delight we were so lucky to grow up watching.

Labyrinth, 1986, directed by Jim Henson.

No actor’s portrayal of King Jareth will ever come close to Bowie’s, but at least this remake has a damn good writer.

The writer who’s been appointed for this mammoth honour and responsibility is Nicole Pearlman, who co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Captain Marvel film. Pearlman has so far proven herself as an extremely capable writer with an eye for unique storytelling and a wicked sense of humour.

Details of the film’s plot-line remain unknown. However, the writer has made it clear that the Labyrinth remake will bring something new and original to the table, as opposed to a stock reboot of the old story.

Trust in Pearlman.

The remake is still in it’s very early stages but we can’t wait to see what unfolds from here. In the meantime, Labyrinth movie night anyone?
