Why everyone is obsessed with Meghan Markle's 'Aussie' engagement gown.

When American actress Meghan Markle posed for photographers just hours after revealing her engagement to 33-year-old Prince Harry last month, she wore a white coat over a green dress.

While both sold out of stores and online in less than an hour, the outfit choice was… safe. It was Princess-y and conservative and official.

But the outfit the 36-year-old Suits star donned for her latest round of engagement pics, released on Kensington Palace's official social media channels, was anything but.

In the snaps (which, side note, makes us think we've never seen a pair as much in love as these two), Meghan wears a couture gown by British-based designers Ralph & Russo.

The couture label was founded just 10 years ago by Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, two Australians who met while both working in London.

The top half of the dress is almost entirely sheer, bar a few cleverly placed beaded details. It costs more than AU$97,000 and reportedly takes "hours of manual labour" to create.

According to Fashionista, the dress is part of the luxury label's 2017 couture runway and first appeared on the catwalk in July 2016.

The designer is also a favourite among other famous faces, and has dressed the likes of Angelina Jolie, Zendaya and Gwyneth Paltrow in the past.

Comparisons between Meghan and Harry's engagement pics and the photographs from the label's fashion show prove that the bride-to-be added an extra layer of lining to the dress's sheer top to avoid any... un-princess like moments.

While there's no doubt that dress is an absolute showstopper - and even hints at Meghan's possible bridal style and designer of choice - some royal watchers where less-than-impressed with the unconventional decision to wear sheer.

But frankly, the way Meghan continues to break the royal mould - sheer dress and all - is a breath of fresh air. The overwhelming majority agree: this gown is positively gorgeous.

And judging by the look of love in Harry and Meghan's eyes in these snaps, we're pretty sure they don't care a single bit about public opinion regarding the dress.
