Sarah-Jessica Parker's mind-blowing theory about Sex and the City characters changes everything.

Usually the ones to jump on the freight-train that is the fan theory phenomenon are those confined to the far depths of the internet, dark rooms and analytical minds in tow.

Very rarely is the characters themselves who indulge in a little fan theory that questions everything we know about the shows we love.

However, Sarah-Jessica Parker has shed a little bit of light on her own bizarre ideas about her fellow characters on Sex and The City.

Talking to the Nerdist podcast in the US, the woman who was almost more commonly known as Carrie Bradshaw said she has often wondered in the past if her three best friends were simply figments of her imagination.

“I used to wonder if Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were real,” Parker said.

“They’re such perfectly archetypal characters. So you’re writing a column about sexual politics and observations of female/male primarily, heterosexual relationships, so you’re picking one type.”

Basically, Parker believes that each episode in the series was based on the subject of Carrie’s column that week.

“You’re saying, ‘This type is this and this,’ and then you complicate it more, like any good writer does. So I’m not entirely sure they are real.

“I think they’re invented types, she is among them because that’s her way of infiltrating story and affecting story too, to have her own actions affect those friendships and document their response.

“We don’t know if any of the things that happened are real because she’s just writing a column every week. What we are seeing isn’t necessarily what happened in New York City.”

It’s like the ultimate fan theory: no-one actually existed. But this one seems to actually hold some weight among fans, who are posting on social media that their “minds are blown.”
