Shannon Noll: My family saved me from drugs & depression.

The Idol singer reveals things haven’t been going so well for him lately…

His dreams of a singing career became a reality after being runner-up in the first series of Australian Idol back in 2003. But for Shannon Noll, the rest of his journey has been much rockier.

Since injuring his back chopping wood on his four-hectare Victorian property in 2012, Shannon, 38, quickly fell into depression and began to resent he and his family’s country lifestyle.

“I never understood the process of depression until then. I loved the view but it didn’t make me feel nice anymore. I felt nothing but frustration, anger and fear” Shannon told Woman’s Day.

Shannon’s depression brought back old memories of addiction to drugs and alcohol in his younger years.

“I was drinking and smoking [marijuana] every day,” he says. “It was a way of pushing my feelings down and not dealing with the problems. It’s really tough living on a farm and I can understand why bush suicide rates are high” Shannon continued.

Shannon says it was his wife Rochelle and three children Cody, 13, Blake, 11, and Sienna, 7 whohelped him to get his life back on track, after deciding unanimously to move back to Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.

Since moving, Shannon’s single We Only Live Once became number 1 on the iTunes video charts earlier this year. “Don’t take things for granted and live each day as if it’s your last” Shannon says.
