Taylor Swift's new video tries to smash stereotypes, but people are divided.

On Monday night, Taylor Swift released the music video for You Need to Calm Down, the newest single on her upcoming album Lover.

In the 12 hours since the video has been posted, it has been viewed over 11 million times.

The celebrity cast boasts the likes of Ellen Degeneres, Ru Paul, and the entire cast of Queer Eye. For many, including the celebrities in the video, the production is a message of solidarity with the queer community.

Moments after the video went live, Ellen DeGeneres tweeted “I’m proud of @TaylorSwift13 for making this video. I’m proud to be in it. I’m proud to be a member of this community”.

While some believe Taylor Swift created the video with the best of intentions, a lot of people believe otherwise, suggesting the 29-year-old is hijacking a popularised queer movement for her own financial and cultural gain.

Even The Onion weighed in with a not so satirical headline.

Others believed the superstar was using her immense platform and influence to celebrate the queer community.

Regardless of where you stand, Taylor hasn’t yet commented.

She probably can’t come to the phone right now.
