It wasn’t Harry Potter and it wasn’t Avatar.

But it was equally as spectacular.

The most expensive movie ever made? Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End costing a total of $369 million.

The third instalment in the Pirates franchise was directed by Gore Verbiniski, reunited the magical cast; Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. And it certainly made up for the price tag – pulling in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

It also scored an Oscar nominations for make-up and visual effects – making their hefty price all worth it.

Coming in at number two, Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra, filmed in 1963 blew out to $339.5 million. The 90’s favourite romantic drama, Titanic, was the third most expensive film costing $294 million.

The list was compiled by Business Insider, which takes in reported or estimated budgets and inflation. The top 10 was full of movies that were heavy on special effects.

The cheapest movies on the Top 10 list?

The Hobbit priced in at $257 million and Avatar was only a little more expensive at $261 million.

Also on the list was Spider-Man 3, Tangled and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
