Princess Kate, Miley, SJP, and more. The best fashion moments of 2013.

Looking back at your clothing choices from a decade ago is cringe-worthy but how did we fare in the last 12 months? We take a look back at the top fashion moments of 2013.

Kate Middleton’s hospital look.

Women the world over gasped (and got a little teary) when Kate emerged from the hospital holding newborn Prince George. Middleton wore a blue polka-dot Jenny Packham dress with cap sleeves and an empire waist – a hat-tip to the maternity outfit Diana wore when Prince William was born.

2. Miley Cyrus everything.

Cara Delevingne might have been the model of the moment but the female that took the spotlight this year was, without doubt Miley Cyrus. She single-handedly bought twerking into the world’s consciousness, and throughout 2013 made some er, rather risky fashion choices.

3. SJP’s Met Ball mohawk.

Amazing.

Enough said.

4. Kim Kardashian’s Givenchy maternity dress.

While SJP was wearing a mohawk and Madonna raided her wardrobe for some vintage tartan to wear to the punk-themed Met Ball, Kim Kardashian turned up in a floral Givenchy maternity dress that completely and utterly swamped her.

Kardashian had met with Anna Wintour the night before and we speculated if the style maven had given her the thumbs up on the dress. But unfortunately for KK even if she had, it was widely panned by everyone with an internet connection. Her floral number was the target of a ‘Who wore it better ‘ meme comparing her designer dress to Mrs Doubtfire and a couch. Even Robin Williams weighed in.

5. Jennifer Lawrence became our imaginary BFF.

If Miley Cyrus takes out the completely fictional ‘Most Talked About Celebrity’ prize that I just made up, Jennifer Lawrence would have to take out the equally fictional ‘Most Goofy Yet Lovable Celebrity Ever’

The 23-year-old was made the face of Dior which meant she got to wear some stunning gowns to the award ceremonies but also unfortunately meant she had a few malfunctions along the way. Her navy dress separated when she got up to collect her SAG award and she memorably tripped in her white strapless gown at the Oscars.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s side-butt.

First there was side-boob, then Gwyneth Paltrow showed off her Tracy Anderson-toned derriere in a sheer panelled dress at the Iron Man 3 premiere, coining the term side-butt.

H&M announced they were finally opening an Australian store.

About time guys.

Birkenstocks.

The unattractive orthopedic sandal became the footwear after models and fashion bloggers and followers all embraced the chunky backpacker fave. It was a nearly naked Miranda Kerr wearing the black Arizona style  in Vogue that got us over the line.

It was a dismal year for Australian fashion.

A string of Australian designers closed their doors, some who like Lisa Ho had been in business for 30 years. Ho foreclosed due to heavy debt, Alannah Hill walked away from her label of 18 years having terminated her agreement with Factory X (the company that had funded her for the last 16 years) and Collette Dinnigan called it quits, announcing she’s no longer producing her main range.

They weren’t the only ones, Kirrily Johnston went into voluntary administration, Bettina Liano’s 24-year-old business was placed into liquidation after a dismal offer by The Apparel Group was rejected by Liano, and Kit Willow Podgornik was reportedly unceremoniously dismissed from the Willow brand she launched a decade ago by The Apparel Group.

Scrunchies.

2013 heralded the return of some fairly dubious nineties trends – the crop top, shirts tied arounds waists, grunge – but none so divisive and offensive as the hair scrunchie. We ran a bet in the Mamamia office, which our editor Jamila unfortunately lost (to me, HA!) meaning she had to don a scrunchie in public for a whole week. We’re still laughing about that one.

Anne Hathaway’s ‘nipplegate’ Prada dress at the Oscars.

Anne Hathaway’s pink Prada dress drew much controversy. There was the “darts or nipples?” debate, the latter “wardrobe malfunction or intentional” debate.

Valentino then sent a press release about Anne’s “pink embroidered tulle illusion gown,” prompting Anne to send her own press release explaining how she had come to wear a Prada gown.

Hathaway revealed that had to switch her dress at the last minute after learning “that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear.”  It was rumoured to be either her Les Miserables co-star Amanda Seyfried or Jennifer Aniston.
