Olympics day 9 recap: The fastest man alive.

Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive

Just under 10 seconds is all it took for Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt to win the men’s 100m final – and set a new Olympic Record of 9.63 seconds. Seven of the eight men in the race ran it in less than 10 seconds – Yohan Blake, Justin Gatlin and Ryan Baile all record personal bests but it wasn’t enough to stop Bolt from defending his title.

In other Olympic news that happened over the weekend, Britain’s Andy Murray won the men’s tennis final, cyclist Anna Meares made it to the quarter finals in the sprint, the women’s water polo team defeated China in the quarter final and Michael Diamond shot well in the diamond trap. He’s now leading the field after the first three rounds of qualifying.

Mitchell Watt tells the media to “wake up”

Are the Australian athletes disappointed with their performance at this year’s Olympic Games? Or is the media putting words into their mouths? Mitchell Watt – who won a silver medal in the long jump over the weekend hit out at the media during a press conference yesterday.

“The team is happy, I’m happy, the head coach is happy, I’ve got thousands of messages from back home that are happy and the only people that aren’t happy are you guys,” he said. “You need to wake up.”

Australia has now won one gold medal, 12 silver medals and 7 bronze medals at the games. Watt was one of the athletes thought to be a “gold medal chance”.

“I was pretty aware there was a gold medal tag around my neck. I was asked by a journalist over there, the first thing he said was that’s disappointing and then asked why Australia seems to be not doing well. I said it’s questions like that that make it seem like we’re not doing well,” he said at the press conference.

Oh Kate and Wills…

We’re sharing this one just because…

It’s the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrating Great Britain’s gold medal in the men’s team sprint track cycling final in London on August 2.

Awwww….

In an interview later that day, Prince William said he was terrified he’d be caught on Kiss Cam with his wife.

“I was absolutely dreading they were going to come and show myself and my wife and that would have been very embarrassing,” he said.

What is an Olympic Gold Medal worth?

Ever seen those Olympic athletes standing on the podium, biting into their medals to check that they’re real? Well, they’re right to do so.

It turns out that there isn’t really much physical difference between a gold and a silver medal – because a whopping 93% of Olympic gold medals are made up of the second place getter’s element.

In fact if you melted down one of the London 2012 Gold medals it would only be worth about $650. Try asking one of the women who won gold in the 4×100 freestyle on the first weekend of the Games though – we bet they don’t care a jot.

And finally… We’re a little bit fascinated by team uniforms.
