Am I getting old or does today's music suck?

I have been thinking a lot about music lately.

I was driving to work one morning and Billy Joel came on, crooning about a piano man.

Tears streamed down my face as he left me sitting in a bar, surrounded by all these lost souls drowning their worries away. God bless that man. I wish we could produce music that told stories, that gives me chills.

Music has changed a great deal over the past 50 or so years. I am a great lover of music from the 60’s right through to the naughties, but I am starting to tire of the latest barrage of Top 40 music making my ears bleed.

I cannot stand the likes of Johnny Ruffo, Justin Bieber, or Rihanna. Give me the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival or Queen any day. When did music go from

I’ll be on top of the world when I’m on top of you, girl!

I may only be 24, but I really don’t like the music aimed toward my generation, and younger. I recently watched The Sapphires at the movies, and I have been lapping the soundtrack up ever since.

With songs like Land of 1000 Dances and What a man, (which actually have soul) who needs On Top or Boyfriend?

Don’t get me wrong, I do like some of the music that filters through. I enjoy Jessica Mauboy immensely. I think she is a beautiful role model for girls, with her cheeky smile and powerhouse voice. I just hope the American music giants don’t get their hands on her and strip her down, musically and physically.

I am sick of the auto-tune, the rap, the so-called R&B crap that doesn’t hold a candle to Elvis Presley, whose style of music just doesn’t exist anymore. I want old music back, when people actually sang.

I also wish we could embrace real women in music. I was working out at the gym the other week and my eyes were assaulted by Ricki-Lee, a once-voluptuous Australian Idol, now suffering Lollypop Syndrome and gyrating on the screen, having sold her soul to the music sex demons.

I just hope and pray the children of my generation know who The Beatles, Freddie Mercury, and The Dire Straits are.

I really want them to hear the stories they had to tell, grooving to special music and not listening to someone proclaim how they can’t wait to get on top of them.
