9 very specific Y2k beauty trends coming back that we weren't ready for.

While 2022 beauty trends might seem galaxies away from the sort of stuff we were doing in the early naughties (crazy blush! frosty everything! glossy lips!), you can't deny that these nostalgic styles are behind some of the biggest trending looks today. 

Heavily influenced by beauty icons of the late 90s and early 2000s like Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Halle Berry, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson - these makeup trends walked so Y2k trends could run.

Because while Y2k is a fun new trend for some of us, for others (like you and me) it's like catching up with an old mate and re-discovering something you once loved.

That's why we've pulled together nine very specific Y2k beauty trends that are making a comeback.

Glitter me up and let's go.

Shiny, glossy lips.

If you grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s, one day you would've found yourself graduating from Lip Smackers to a Lancome Juicy Tube lip gloss. You did, didn't you? That's just how it went. 

These cult glosses were an absolute staple for everyone who had a face - whether you were a tween who was just getting into makeup or a twenty-something-year-old getting ready for a night out. 

There were so many colours. So many scents. So much hair-to-lip stickiness.

If you're anything like us, you might've even gone on to dabble in the glossy delight that was the iconic MAC Cosmetics Lip Glass.

While the hype around these cult glosses eventually died out (sad!), there's no denying the coveted high-shine look that absolutely *owned* the naughties is now making a strong comeback. 

When it comes to lips, it's all about the high-shine, glossy lip look right now. The biggest rule to remember? More is more.

My recommendation for a 2022 Y2k lip gloss vibe: Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in Pitaya (which is honestly just a fancy name for bubble gum pink IMO).

Roll-on body glitter.

If there's one great signifier of the 2000s, its excessive glitter - face, hair, body, the whole show. Like, you were either covered in glitter, or you were doing it wrong.

And the choices! Goodness, there were so many choices. 

It either came in a roll-on stick, a squeezy gel-type tube, a handy spray, or those teeny stackable pots. And it almost always, *always*, had some kind of fun, extremely artificial scent.

What a time.

While the Y2k take on body glitter is a little less fluorescent and the formulas are approximately 1000 times better (hey, Tom Ford), it just goes to show that brushing your limbs - decolletage, shoulders and arms - with sparkling pigments has never been cooler.

My recommendation for a 2022 Y2k body glitter vibe: Anastasia Beverly Hills Shimmer Body Oil.

Visible lip liner.

Worn by pretty much every supermodel and popstar, ever, visible lip liner was all the rage in the late 90s and early 2000s. 

The popular look was usually achieved with a black or brown lip liner, and your lips were lined with a deep shade that was then feathered out into a subtle ombré look. 

And, as above, it simply wouldn’t be a 2000s makeup look if layers upon layers of ultra-shiny lip gloss wasn’t applied over the top.

And in case you haven't noticed, the visible liner look is now popping up in the Y2K era. Take a peek at any red carpet (ahem... Doja Cat's recent look on the Grammy's red carpet) and you'll find the trend creeping back onto the lips of celebrities.

Smudged black eyeliner.

Avril Lavigne? Is that you??

We're just going to say it: The 2000s had some of the best grungy black eyeliner going - and it was usually thanks to this gem:

Our waterlines are collectively screaming.

If you're familiar with this pink and black packaging, chances are you wore this pencil down to the stump lining your eyes in circles. Right? Knew it! Because no matter whether you were going to the movies or a night out, all-over smudged black eyeliner was ALWAYS necessary.

Well, turns out the trend is making a comeback, with makeup looks such as the reverse cat eye taking over TikTok and bringing a more modern feel to the look.

Frosty eyeshadow.

Frosty everything was a big deal in the late 90s early 2000s. Like, there was just so. much. frost. 

From icy blue eyeshadow to baby pink-frosted lips, when it came to colour and shimmer, more *always* equalled better.

Thanks to shows like Euphoria, washes of glittery silver and blue eyeshadow are a trendy thing again - and honestly, we're kind of into the modern twist.

Spiky hair.

Was it really a 2000s red carpet if no one showed up with this spiky hair look? No. The answer is no. 

As evidenced by this almost every celebrity hairstyle below, spiky hair was such a cool-girl vibe.

And in 2022, it looks like Y2k has a fresh take on the trend. 

At the recent Grammy awards Doja Cat, Billie Eilish and Tia Tia all wore spiked-up hairstyles - it was unexpected but kinda awesome.

Face-framing tendrils.

Two single strands. So much power. 

Pulling out a coupla these bad boys on either side of your face and burning them flat with a hair straightener was the ultimate way to transform your look in the 2000s - especially if you didn't have curtain bangs. 

Usually teamed with a slicked-back ponytail, crimped strands or a half-up half-down style, you could either opt for one tendril or go all out with two.

Today, we're seeing tonnes of celebrities rocking the old tendrils (lookin' at you Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner), and we're here for it. 

The best part about this style? Whether you opt for baby braids or two simple strands of hair, any type of hair texture can rock tendrils. Yes, even yours!

Butterfly clips.

Ahh the beloved butterfly clips. If you didn’t have a head full of butterfly clips and crimped hair, did you even 90s? 

Every girl donned at least two thousand of these on her skull at some point or another, because they were the epitome of style, and the *best* way to finish off a 'do.

Popularised by celebs such as Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Britney Spears, butterfly hair clips were THE hair accessory.

The only drawback? Bumping your head on something. God bless. 

Along with bright scrunchies, colourful claw clips and headbands, it looks like butterfly clips are popping back up in the best possible way. 

So, call your mum and get your old box of bold hair accessories - because they're officially a thing again!
