Move over linen, there's a new summer 'It Dress' for 2023.

For my summer wardrobe, I rarely gravitate towards anything that’s not linen. It’s easy, breezy and perfect to throw on when you can’t be bothered to plan out your outfit.

There’s a reason linen dresses have become the ultimate closet staple in recent years, and for that, we have Australian-based labels to thank.

There’s no denying that the popularity of linen dresses has risen thanks to the success of Australian e-commerce site, DISSH, which rapidly took the world by storm. From people on TikTok sharing their DISSH hauls to women perusing the site before their month-long Europe trip — the Aussie label redefined “It girl” fashion, and we all immediately jumped on board.

Linen, which was once a fabric worn to the beach or when you’re running out the door, turned into something people were seen wearing to weddings, dinner parties and special occasions.

But, while I still love linen, DISSH and dresses that require little effort, I can’t help but ask, “is the era of linen dresses over?”. *Cue gasps and horrified faces*.

I know, never in a million years did I think I would write that for so many of you to see, but allow me to explain.

Throughout autumn and winter, there was one very specific piece of clothing women were spotted wearing: The denim maxi skirt. Despite it being divisive — with some claiming it was unflattering — women were pairing it with knee-high boots, oversize jumpers and wrap coats.

Slowly, you started seeing a pool of denim skirts wherever you went, making you question if we were in 2023 or 1993.

So, continuing on with the theme, I strongly believe that this summer the denim dress will replace the linen dress. While it’s a strong juxtaposition against the flowingness and comfortability of the linen dress, I reckon it's time for a change, and similar to linen, denim is timeless and easy to throw on.

Does that mean I’ll be throwing out my linen dresses, never to be worn again? Definitely not. Linen will remain forever, I just think it’s time to make way for something more fresh.

So, if you’re wanting to find a flattering (and one that won’t make you sweat) denim dress, here are all of my picks.
