"The older I get the more I’m learning to love the skin I’m in." Brittany Hockley told us her 9 golden rules for success in your thirties.

Your thirties. Whether you're in them or not, you'll know that being in your thirties doesn't mean you have your whole life sorted. Goodness, no. You're still messing things up. Still learning. Still trying to navigate the big ol' game that is, well, life.

In saying that, you've probably picked up some powerful little life lessons and a few good habits along the way, and learned to love the person that you've become.

Just ask Brittany Hockley.

The 34-year-old has one big and busy life – she's an actress, reality star, author and podcast co-host with Laura Byrne. And as she tells Mamamia, her rise to success hasn't come without its challenges.

Here, we sat down with the esmi Skin Minerals brand ambassador and had a chat about all the changes she's making in her thirties.

From skincare to career moves, here are the 9 golden rules Brittany lives by.

1. Sunscreen. Always.

When it comes to skincare, this is Brittany's number one rule (and honestly, it should be yours, too!)

"I always wear sunscreen now," Brittany tells Mamamia. "I damaged my skin a lot in my youth by surfing and lazing about in the sun – probably like most of our generation. So, now it is about trying to reverse the damage!"

Hands up who can relate?!

"I use SPF everyday on my face, chest, hands, body – everywhere. I always carry it in my bag."

Full marks, Britt.

2. Know your skin type.

Another important thing the podcast host has learnt over the years, is knowing what her skin needs. "I've noticed a big difference in my skin the last few years. Life catches up with you that's for sure! My skin is always so dry – that is my major battle."

Luckily, skin care is something she said she's utterly "obsessed" with. "I spend a lot of time and money looking after it, from treatments like lasers, needling and hydra facials to really good quality skincare, which is why I love esmi. It's made from quality ingredients and [has] different products that suit everyone."

"There is a lot of thought and love that has gone into every product with esmi – and they get results," she shares.

"They are always growing and evolving and they are an Australian company, which I love. It's also vegan and cruelty-free, but it still contains high levels of actives, antioxidants and vitamins - meaning you get the results but only using the good stuff!"

3. Always take your makeup off.

Apart from the diligent application of SPF, one of her most essential skincare steps is a solid cleansing routine. Britt said cleansing morning and night is one of her non-negotiables, saying "I always take my makeup off at night."

Ooft. We love to see it.

And honestly, why wouldn't you want to wash off all that makeup, dirt and grime from the day?!

Her cleanser of choice? A creamy esmi number that works gently but deeply to remove foundation and impurities.

"I use esmi Uncomplicated Cleanser to double cleanse. It's so nice."

The best part? It's suitable for all skin types. Win.

4. Hydration is your friend.

As someone with perpetually dry skin, Britt said she likes to ensure that hydration is a huge focus in her skincare routine. She uses a combination of balms, oils and moisturisers to ensure her skin stays happy, healthy and glowing.

"Eye cream is a new addition just this past year (let's call it lack of sleep haha). I use the esmi Eye Delight Reflection Eye Balm," she tells Mamamia.

"Then the esmi 24k Gold Nourishing Oil too... this is a definite favourite!" (Irrelevant side note: It looks extremely pretty on your bathroom shelf.)

Afterwards, she said she likes to lock all that juicy hydration down by using the esmi Brightening Moisturiser.

Did someone say glazed donut?

5. Do something that makes you happy.

THIS. "I think success to me is being able to make a living doing something that makes you happy or fills your cup in some capacity."

"It isn't how many Instagram followers you have, it isn't owning designer clothing, it is finishing the day and not wishing you were doing something else."

"I guess I never really look at my life and say "Oh look, you're successful!" because I am always working so hard to better myself or my work and trying to create a life I am happy with."

"For nearly two years I worked full time in a hospital emergency radiology department, all hours of the day and night, whilst doing the podcast around that. Success in anything doesn't come easily. It is about passion, hard work, commitment and consistency!"

6. Following your dreams takes sacrifice.

When it comes to her career path and following her passion, Britt said it certainly has its challenges.

"Firstly, if you are starting a business, of any sorts, don't expect to have a life! Work hours don't exist."

"I run the business side of things and let me tell you, there is no 'off' switch. I am often sending emails at 2am and weekdays run into weekends! So beware of that! But, when you're working on something you own, you don't mind as much."

"There will always be people that want to give you their opinion. There were so many people that told me starting a podcast was a stupid idea, that it wouldn't get me anywhere and wasn't a real job. Imagine if I had listened!"

"Mistakes are part of the journey. You'll fall down, but you'll also get back up. Don't let it stop you."

7. Everyone won't like you – and that's okay.

One of the most important golden nuggets she's learnt? Don't care so much about what other people think.

"The online world can be mean. Not everyone will like you and be happy for your success. That is ok. You won't like everyone either. The difference is not everyone can keep that to themselves, unfortunately."

8. Age is just a number.

In case you needed a reminder that age is just a number, Britt said, "For me life is just beginning in my 30s!"

"It's easy to get into a rut of 'I'm too old to start again or try something new' – but that, my friends, is nonsense."

Hear, hear!

"Want proof? J. K. Rowling was a 28-year-old single mother on welfare, and self-labelled 'failure'. She was 32 when the first Harry Potter book was published, after being rejected by 12 publishers. The Harry Potter brand is worth around $15 billion today."

"Oprah Winfrey was 33 when she signed The Oprah Show, which made her a billionaire."

Feeling inspired? We sure are.

9. Prioritise self care.

When it comes to self care, Britt tells Mamamia it's something she's trying to prioritise more and more.

"Unfortunately, I am very bad at this, but I can say it should be VERY important. The last few years I have run myself ragged. But what I always make time for is exercise, that is my self-care."

"My dog Delilah is the best Winfrey but man, she's got some energy! She is an Aussie Shepherd and we have to clock some serious kilometres every day, so that has been great for me. It is my priority next year to look after myself a little better because it is a critical part of the success recipe."
