Why everyone is obsessing over Emma Thompson at her damehood ceremony.

Can you believe Emma Thompson has only JUST been made a dame?

The actress, writer, star of the best Christmas movie of all time and all round bloody legend received her honour for Dame Commander of the British Empire from Prince William on Wednesday in a big, fancy ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

But of course, Thompson, who walked onstage barefoot and threw her Louboutins behind her at the 2014 Golden Globes, was going to have some fun with it.

Seemingly on a quest to never, ever wear heels again (who can blame her?) the 59-year-old rocked up at her damehood ceremony in blindingly white Stan Smith sneakers.

Oh, and an equal pay pin because like we said: legend.

And we're not the only ones obsessed.

Yes, the people agree: Emma Thompson is our favourite.

Thompson was first named for the honour in June, and in September joked with Seth Meyers that her attitude towards the damehood had changed.

"Dame Commander of the British Empire... I’ve become much more commanding since it happened," she said. "I’ve also had every seat I sit on just made slightly taller. It’s subtle, so people are lifting their heads slightly more toward me than they did before, but they’re not quite sure why."

Ha.

She also spoke about her decision to accept the title.

"They send you a letter saying, 'Will you accept it?' You can choose not to. You can choose to say, 'Well, of course we don’t have an empire anymore, thank God, because it was ghastly, colonial, racist, dreadful undertaking on every level,' and actually have some moral principle about it. Or you can be like me and say, 'Hmm, it’s gonna be a really nice badge'."

Thompson was awarded her damehood by Prince William, who she cheekily asked for a kiss during the ceremony.

"I love Prince William" she told reporters. "I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other. I said, 'I can’t kiss you, can I?' And he said, 'No, don't!'"

"He said, 'This day isn't about me, it's about you'."

Thompson has know William and younger brother Prince Harry since they were children and is a long-term friend of their father Prince Charles.
