The accessory you might've noticed was absent on the Emmys red carpet. #RIPSprayTans

On the red carpet at this year’s Emmy Awards, there was one notable beauty absence. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that this one accessory and beauty trend has collapsed and died. No, it’s not Jon Snow from Game of Thrones… it’s the spray tan.

Refreshingly, many of our favourite celebrities – Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black) and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), to name just a few – arrived to the Emmys sporting their natural skin tone.

Gone is that fake-baked, deep bronze tan that we’ve become accustomed to seeing, replaced instead with, well, the skin colour that these TV stars were born with. (Post continues after gallery.)

A spray tan seems to go hand-in-hand with big events these days, whether you’re hitting the red carpet, getting married or just going for a drink at the local wine bar.

Now? The chicest thing to do is to just leave your skin as it is and emphasise what you’ve got – rather than what you don’t.

Think of all the gorgeous accessories you could buy instead with the money you save from a spray tan!

Not to mention the convenience - no more walking around in a scarecrow-like pose, braless and in your baggiest get-up, worried that you’ll smudge your brand new spray tan.

Let's not forget that signature spray tan smell, which is certainly... unique.

Of course, what I felt was most beautiful about this year's Emmys red carpet was the diversity among TV stars.

Thanks to shows like Orange is the New Black, Scandal, Fresh Off the Boat and Black-ish, we’re beginning to see more and more actors of many different ethnicities and skin tones, spray tanned or not. Uzo Aduba, AKA “Crazy Eyes” from Orange is the New Black, wore a huge smile that said it all.

So the real message here, folks, is that we enjoy watching TV shows that tell the stories of all different races and skin colours – even more than we love ogling celebs and their beauty looks on the red carpet.

What's your verdict: to spray tan, or not spray tan?
