Fifi Box told a story she thought was funny. It was not.

Seinfeld immortalised the perilous consequences to befall those who illicitly park in disabled car spaces in a hilarious episode from the show’s fourth season.

This week, however, Fifi Box has learned that, in real life, tales about parking in a disabled spot do not go down well. She told a story on air about parking in a disabled spot and then faking a limp once she realised what she’d done.

She clearly thought it was funny.

Disability activists and another prominent radio host beg to differ.

The popular Fox FM broadcaster has made an on-air apology after being slammed by fellow radio broadcaster, Tom Elliott of 3AW Drive, for faking a limp upon realising she’d inadvertently parked in a disabled spot.

“I think Fifi Box and Fox FM should hang their heads in shame,” Elliott said during his show.

“I think imitating or impersonating a disabled person just so you can justify having parked in their spot is an extraordinarily low act.”

Elliott’s comments were echoed by a disability rights activist who called in to the the show, adding: “I was really angry when I heard the promo yesterday. It made me very frustrated that she went out of her way to pretend to have a limp while walking to the car.”

Following the backlash, Fifi has issued a explanation and apologised on air.

“On the weekend I went to the supermarket. At the time I mistakenly parked in a disabled car space. I went into the supermarket, I came out and realised I had [parked in the disabled spot], and was so embarrassed because there were people loitering around the car… but I just felt so embarrassed and ashamed [that] I didn’t know how to handle the situation. I pulled my cap down over my eyes, I was holding [my daughter] Trixie, and I limped back to the car.”

“What Tom failed to mention in the context of that [report], it was 6am on Sunday morning, I’d arrived at the supermarket car park and it was empty. Now, I usually park in the ‘parents with prams’ – which is right next to the disabled car park. I’ve missed the park by one and I’ve ended up in the disabled car park.

“I could have just arrogantly walked back to my car but… what I did was, I just limped a little bit back to the car. Now I need to point out that I wasn’t imitating a disabled person. I have far more respect for them… So if I have offended anyone by telling that story, I am SO sorry.”

The main take away from this blow out, is that the adage look before you leap should be applied to both the selection of parking spaces and when sharing personal anecdotes on commercial radio.

Potentially most shocking of all the details to have emerged from this story is that there are SUPERMARKETS OPENED AT 6AM ON SUNDAYS?? You learn something new every day.
