Geoff Huegill has opened up about his wife Sara's alleged shoplifting for the first time.

Just over a fortnight ago, Sara Huegill, the wife of former Olympian Geoff Huegill, was arrested for allegedly stealing a pair of $2500 leather pants from a boutique in Byron Bay.

According to Tuesday night’s A Current Affair, the 34-year-old is also accused of accepting payments from at least five clients for work that was never carried out.

Ahead of the program, Geoff Huegill made a public statement for the first time about his wife’s behaviour.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Huegill wrote, “at times, good people make poor choices”.

“We all trip over and make mistakes and unfortunately, we let others down. But that doesn’t make us bad people.

“There are no excuses for the poor choices, however, when we look back at a moment in time, naturally there are things we would all do differently.

“I want to extend my heart felt appreciation to those who have supported us and those who continue to support us in these challenging times.

Allie Lissing, the co-founder and director of swimwear retailer I Dream of Bikini, told A Current Affair she paid Sara Huegill $3300 for publicity work, only for nothing to be done.

Lissing claimed when she asked for a refund, she did not receive a response from Sara.

Jay Sylvester and Daniel Leshak said they had a similar experience when they paid Sara $6000 to promote their health drink BB Unleashed.

“We didn’t expect the world but just something,” Sylvester said.

In total, five small businesses claimed they were ‘ripped off’ by the publicist.

A statement from Sara Huegill's lawyer, supplied to A Current Affair, read:

"Over a period of time Sara developed increasing difficulty with anxiety and depression which resulted in inattention to administrative matters such as company registration and Sara taking on more work than she could manage.

"From late 2017 Sara became unable to fulfil her obligations to the full extent and clients became unhappy, which unfortunately compounded the issues Sara is facing. Sara deeply regrets the circumstances and apologises unreservedly to her clients.

"Sara has offered to make amends to clients, some of whom have chosen to ventilate their grievances through a court process, and others have approached the media. Where matters are before the courts there is no comment.

"As this is a matter of person seeking to deal with anxiety and depression, we would ask that people respect the circumstances and privacy of Sara and her family.

"If any former client of Sara has a legitimate claim they are invited to contact info@moissonlawyers.com."

Sara Huegill will face Byron Bay Local Court on shoplifting charges on June 7.
