What is Insomnia about?

Welcome to Emma Averill's world. She is, on paper, living a charmed life. Working as a successful lawyer by day, Emma then retreats to an idyllic home she shares with her husband and two children. Her car is fancy, her home is huge and everything is just — nice.

That is of course until her 40th birthday looms and the cracks begin to show. That isn't to make some cheap, outdated commentary that life is over once you hit the big 4-0 but Emma is dealing with some trauma that suggests this milestone might come with some issues for her.

When Emma's sister Phoebe lands on her doorstep it's clear that some deep-seated tales from their childhood are about to surface. Specifically, when their mother was a similar age to Emma she began to experience a number of mental health problems which led to her becoming sectioned.

And here Emma finds herself traipsing an eerily familiar path — except this time instead of watching on as her mother fell foul to the grips of ill mental health, she's living it herself. Insomnia takes over, she finds herself pyjama-soaked in the pond and everything begins to fray.

The big question is — will she be able to rewrite a different outcome for herself or is she doomed to follow in her mother's footsteps?

Who stars in Insomnia?

Insomnia comes to life thanks to a solid ensemble cast which helps tell this story full of twists, dark secrets and moments that will unsettle you.

Leading the cast is Vicky McClure who has been a mainstay on British TV series over the years but you will most likely remember her from This Is England. Playing her gruff yet supportive husband Robert Averill is Tom Cullen who not only wears a beard well but is a great scene partner to McClure.

Leanne Best from Black Dog plays Emma's sister Phoebe and India Fowler and Smylie Bradwell do a great job stepping into the shoes of her children.

Is Insomnia based on a book?

If you're a fan of Sarah Pinborough's writing you'll be thrilled to learn this series is an adaptation of her novel of the same name. Pinborough has a knack for getting under your skin and bringing vivid descriptions of psychological tales to the fore and it's no different here.
