The Married At First Sight twins have explained their "disrespectul" 'Shrek' joke.

Last night’s premiere episode of the fourth season of Married At First Sight had more than its fair share of awkward moments.

Like, that time identical twins Sharon and Michelle called fellow bride Cheryl ‘Princess Shrek’.

It all went down during their group hens party (a sentence we never thought we would type...) when 25-year-old Cheryl revealed she was born in Scotland, in a hospital burnt on the grounds of an old castle.

"I'm a princess," she told her fellow brides.

One of the twins then joked, "like the Shrek princess?", leaving Cheryl in tears, who then declared she would "never say rude things to anyone".

"I respect you. Don't disrespect me," she continued.

(We'd like to take this moment to point out that Princess Shrek aka Princess Fiona is only one of the most bad-ass princesses around and we'd actually be super stoked for someone to compare us to her.)

Now, Michelle says she meant nothing sinister by the comment.

"I thought I would continue her princess joke and say, 'Oh, like Shrek?' Meaning Shrek the movie, Princess Fiona in a castle," Michelle told TheFIX.

"So, not sure how she took it. But I was making a little joke, which ran off with her joke about the castle. I'm not sure if she got it or not, it wasn't really that funny, but you know, different sense of [humour]...different sense of humans, I guess," she said.

"At the end of the day, it's just a silly little joke about a silly little movie which everyone loves. So it's all good."

It remains to be seen whether Cheryl feels the same way.
