Sturla won an Olympic medal. Minutes later, he made a confession on live TV.

Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid just won his first individual Olympic medal, but he had something — or rather someone — else on his mind.

Moments after accepting his bronze medal for the 20km individual biathlon (an event combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting) on Tuesday, Lægreid made a decision that left everyone wondering, "What in the Winter Olympics just happened?"

He decided to take his moment in the limelight, on live TV, to make his private life public, confessing a major relationship secret.

The 28-year-old shared he recently cheated on his girlfriend of six months.

Three months ago, Lægreid had an affair. He only just told his girlfriend, and since then, he says, it's been "the worst week of [his] life".

"Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The most beautiful, nicest person in the world and three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her," he told NRK, Norway's state broadcaster, admitting that she might not be watching his event and interview.

He later added, per the BBC: "I had the gold medal in life and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her."

The winter Olympian finished third in his event behind gold medallist Johan Olav Botn of Norway and Eric Perrot of France.

Speaking to the Norwegian broadcaster, per the BBC, he continued to explain that "sport has come second these last few days" as he dealt with the aftermath of his confession.

He also admitted that he wished he could share his moment of glory with his former partner.

Later at a press conference, Lægreid told reporters he's "trying to be a good role model" but that he "admits he did something stupid", per NRK.

It is unclear who Lægreid's girlfriend is. He hasn't posted about a relationship on his Instagram in the past six months and, speaking to NRK, he shared he wouldn't disclose her identity.

"She's probably still processing last week's message but I hope there's light at the end of the tunnel for both of us. And that she can still love me," he added.

Speaking to the same publication later that day, he said he felt he had nothing to lose from opening up about his affair.

"I had a chance at true love and I screwed up so badly. It's not necessarily forgivable," he said.

"But if this gives me a tiny chance to tell her how much I love her, I'd rather commit social suicide on live TV just to get that little chance."

The decision to air his dirty laundry on a global stage was unique, but it got everyone talking.

Former Norwegian cross-country skier Therese Johaug was stunned by Lægreid's revelation.

"I've never seen an interview like this before," she said, per NRK, translated from Norwegian.

"It's completely, completely the wrong time and place to do it."

Former Norwegian biathlete Johannes Thingnes Bø agreed but added that the Olympic confession may not have been pre-planned.

"With Sturla, the emotions are on the outside of his body," he said, per NRK.

"He can't hide it. I think it just burst out. I don't know if he had thought in advance that it would happen."

While it's left many in shock, Lægreid seems to hope his public confession might work in his favour.

Speaking at the press conference, he shared that he hadn't yet seen any reactions from his ex.

"I'm happy, because maybe she hasn't seen it. Maybe she will see it at the right time," he said, per the BBC.

"I hope I don't make anything worse for her, but maybe it can help," he added.

"I don't know, I hope there's a happy ending."
