US election: Kanye West fans throw support behind rapper's White House bid after Trump victory.

Remember when rapper Kanye West announced he was going to run for President of the United States in 2020? Well, that could now be one step closer to reality.

In the wake of yesterday’s shock election result, hundreds of fans took to Twitter to call on the hip hop star to make good on his promise to run for office and to pledge their support.

They say that with Republican Donald Trump — a fellow reality television star with no prior experience in office — now headed for the White House, a West presidency might not be as inconceivable as once thought.

“If Trump was able to become president, then for sure Kanye will win in 2020,” tweeted Lele Pons.

“Alright Kanye West, whenever you wanna start campaigning for 2020, I’m with you,” wrote king.

West was mocked back in 2015 when he announced at the VMAs his intention to run for office — which he has since maintained was serious.

Nevertheless, the announcement did catch the attention of some at the White House.

In the days following, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told the Associated Press that he looked “forward to seeing what slogan [Kanye] chooses to embroider on his campaign hat”.

President Barack Obama also offered some advice, telling West he should be prepared to deal with some “strange characters” and avoid “off-message” statements.

And in a further nod to the possibility of such a feat, Mr Obama said:

“Do you really think that this country is going to elect a black guy from the South Side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States? That is crazy. That’s cray!”

Mr Obama lived on the South Side of Chicago before he was elected president.
