There is such enormous pressure put on our kids during Year 11 and more so in Year 12. Fear is instilled in our kids. It's a systemic problem in my opinion. Schools need to back off from the fear mongering. The tactile words, and enormous pressure. For example - that first chat in year 12 - study or you will fail; don't expect to have time for friends or going out; it's all going to be studying; focus better; focus more; ATAR - did I mentioned ATAR. The pressure and stress of year 12, as a direct result of the system is anxiety provoking. The huge pressure of ATARs - again it's a number, that will only matter once (To get into your course of choice). Very little is explained to these kids that ATAR, nowadays, really isn't important at all (With exception to the higher-level degrees and/or kids who have a degree and focus), otherwise WHO CARES!!! Pathways, pathways should be talked about. A gap year, or a year to work casually. Did you know on average people do 3 university degree's before they settle on one that is right for them, or some study a degree - never use it.
My point - stop the pressure, expectations and discussions. Let him find his own way. We've done our best as parents all their lives, and it's time to step back, and "guide" them - not tell them. He will find his path in life.
I have not seen this podcast till now. I am a neurodiverse mum with three neurodiverse kids. I align with many of the autistic communities' thoughts on these things, but I do not this time. Whilst there are points, he has used less neuro affirming words, he also spoke so eloquently and so genuinely from the heart. From the title of the podcase, language choices, disclaimers - there is a lot of consideration for the Autistic community. When something is read out loud like this, you don't lose context (Opposed to the same content in written words only) - and because off this, I get it, I get his feelings, and I understand all of what he is saying. And let's be real for minute here - we are not all "knowledgeable" on how to present as 100% neuro affirming, not when this is still new. He has taken the time to have some very neuro affirming people to help him with this open letter. This is HIS experience, as HIS point in time. Give people a chance to get there with learning and education. Overall, very well done - I felt his words, all of them - Moreso than any specifically aligned neuro affirming written piece. Just my thoughts ❤
