Fake tan and low rise jeans: We need to talk about the fashion and beauty on The Hills.

When The Hills first graced our television screens in 2006, we had no idea what we were in for.

Running for six seasons until 2010, The Hills centred on former Laguna Beach star Lauren Conrad, who moved to Los Angeles to study fashion, complete internships, and have fights… lots of fights.

In particular, we need to talk about the 2000s fashion and beauty trends from The Hills we all knew, loved, and definitely tried to emulate.

It’s a time in my life that I’ve personally tried to block out and I’m just thankful there’s no photo evidence of me wearing two singlet tops layered atop each other with low rise flare jeans and a chunky belt to resurface on Facebook Memories. (I’ve burned all the pics anyway.)

So, let’s all take a moment to remember the utterly awful fashion and beauty that came out of the 2000s. And if we can learn just one thing from this cringeworthy walk down memory lane, it’s that the sins of the past should never, ever be repeated.

Now prepare to die of secondhand embarrassment. Because don’t you dare tell me you didn’t rock all of these looks.

The headbands

While Lauren’s friends, boyfriends, jobs and apartments may have changed throughout The Hills, one thing never did: her love of headbands. She managed to wear 29 different headbands during the show (the thick black one was defs her fave though). But LC also liked to throw in a headscarf every so often just to mix it up.

The thin eyebrows

We all need group therapy for that wretched period in our lives where we were convinced we had to pluck and pluck and pluck until our eyebrows were all... gone. Thanks for those high arches, LC and Audrina.

The low rise jeans

Because apparently everyone in the noughties agreed the sexiest part of the body is... the hip bone. NEVER AGAIN.

The cropped jeans

Extra points if they were distressed. And double points if you managed to layer them under a dress. That's fashion.

The fake tan and bronzer

Way, way before fake tan was actually good, we all strove to look like Ross Geller after 'four twos'.  Then we'd look into the mirror and murmur quietly to ourselves "this isn't quite orange enough", so we'd grab our bronzer and apply it precisely everywhere for that ~perfect sunkissed look~.

The huge sunnies

The bigger the better. If they didn't cover half your face, why even bother wearing sunnies? (But you know what, it was great protection from the sun.)

The heavy black eyeliner

The Hills stars – and us – refused to leave the house unless both top and bottom lid were aggressively lined with jet black eyeliner. And lashes of mascara, of course.

The only two acceptable hairstyles

Dead straight or giant barrel curls, there was no in between. My hair still hasn't recovered from the days of continuously frying it with a straightener. For real spesh occasions though, I'd spend ages creating those giant and very defined curls that I'd dutifully hairspray a million times to ensure it would stay if a hurricane ever blew past.

Special shout out for all of us who got "honey highlights" because of LC – even though it always ended up looking... brassy. Sorry but you know it's true.

Bubble dresses

I think we've all learnt that no one, literally no one, will ever look good in a style that literally poofs out the middle. Were we simply bored of straight hemlines? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

The hats. All of the hats

Whether it was a fedora, trucker cap, a beanie (or a brimmed beanie which was an actual real thing apparently), they were always so pointless. Let me remind you the cast of The Hills lived in Los Angeles where it's never cold enough to need a beanie. Let alone a brimmed beanie.
