'I feel like I became another person.' Robyn was the breakout star of the '90s. Where is she now?

Mention the name ‘Robyn’ and you’re immediately transported to 2010 when the catchy electro-pop song ‘Dancing On My Own’ blared out across radios and dancefloors the world over. It immediately became the anthem for the ‘broken hearts club’ members and firmly put Swedish singer Robyn on the map. Over the years that have passed she has somewhat fallen off the radar with the artist taking large chunks away from the spotlight.

So what has she been up to?

Well, it would appear she has become a mother.

Coming out of social media hiding, the 44-year-old posted a picture to her Instagram showing off a toddler who bears a striking resemblance to the singer. While we don’t know for sure, we can only assume that this little lookalike is her son after she captioned the picture with: “My time is yours 4-ever Tyko”

This quasi-announcement may come as a shock to fans but would also explain why she hasn’t released new music in five years. Back in 2018 Robyn released her most recent album ‘Honey’ and has since been enjoying some downtime. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she opened up about why she prefers to make music then go to ground for years on end.

"I'm already longing for when I have time to make more music," the singer said. "I've enjoyed this period of me being a little bit more anonymous in my bubble. That doesn't mean I'm not going to enjoy touring and seeing my fans, but it's a different type of environment."

The album ‘Honey’ was a work of catharsis in itself, with Robyn explaining it was the result of some painful personal moments she had endured over the years that predated its release. In a feature interview with New York Times, the singer opened up about suffering from loss during a dark period. Firstly, she split from her partner Max Vitali which was then followed by the death of her close friend Christian Falk who passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Throughout 2014 and 2015 she experienced extreme lows as a result of those hard times but ultimately it was music that helped her come back to life. Taking the time to grieve and heal with therapy meant she was able to rediscover a new part of herself.

“I feel like I almost became another person,” she said in the New York Times interview. “Like the goal wasn’t for me to come back — I really feel like I rearranged my insides in a way. I didn’t know what I even had to go back to. I felt like a lot of things that I believed before were not true anymore.”

Having begun her music career at the tender age of 15, it almost feels like Robyn has lived nine lives. Her debut album ‘Robyn Is Here’ marked the start of her incredible tenure in the music industry and laid the foundations for a career that has been unconventional but still revered all the same. In fact, she’s so influential throughout her 30s she barely released any new music. And yet despite these huge hiatuses she continues to garner attention from industry insiders and fans alike.

Even though it has been almost half a decade since she released new music, we have a feeling that this isn’t the last we’re going to hear from Robyn. As an artist who truly understands what it means to take life and turn it into art, her apparent new journey as a mother can only mean good things for any future music prospects. As always, we will be here in the corner waiting until she brings us more magic.
