Well, this is weird.
It turns out there’s a bit of a creepy reason why a lot of women now choose to give birth lying down, as reported in Now To Love.
You see, according to a paper written by Professor Lauren Dundes and published in the American Journal of Public Health, women didn’t always give birth lying down. It’s a relatively new concept.
For a very long time women were content giving birth while standing up, squatting or sitting down. Even an ancient statue of Cleopatra depicts her kneeling down to give birth, surrounded by five attendants… like you do.
Later, humans got a little crafty and designed birthing stools and chairs for women to sit on while giving birth.
But then King Louis XIV came along.
Side note – here’s some thoughts women have while giving birth. Post continues after video.
King Louis XIV ruled France from 1643 to 1715. He also had over 22 children with his wives and mistresses. Yep, wives and mistresses.
During these frequent births, King Louis XIV realised he quite liked watching women give birth, but he didn’t like that his view was obstructed by upright positions or birthing chairs.

78% of women who choose to give birth lying down might be 78% of women who were not given a choice, or were not informed that giving birth lying down is more painful (the whole weight on your back!) and can be slower (no gravity to help). My kind midwife suggested kneeling on the bed, with the bed moved in a "sitting up position", so I was able to lean on the bed and hold onto it while I pushed. Anyone who is pregnant, you might want to consider that option, as lying on your back in labour is the most uncomfortable and painful position. Consider the options and find one you feel comfortable with - but don't let them make you lie down, unless that's what you want!
I gave birth to both my babies this way
Well said!
So a father wanting to watch his children born is "creepy"?
What was creepy is he wanted to have an unobstructed view of his mistress' vagina etc while she gave birth.
The way that they describe it it seems like it is so he can be a voyeur of the vagina - not to be a supportive spouse or excited father-to-be.
Yeah, I thought that was stupid too. It's not creepy. Have 22 kids with your wives and mistresses is a more unusual choice!
No, making a woman position herself in way that is more convenient for you, rather than what is best for her and the baby is creepy.
