Wool has long been regarded as a durable and reliable textile for its breathability and longevity… BUT, you have to care for it correctly.
I’ve finally nailed looking after my woollen items, and while it’s a little more effort in the laundry, it means they will literally last a lifetime.
Hand washing is the gold standard, but I cheat a little by using the hand washing setting on my machine, placing the wool knit in a lingerie bag so it’s more protected and to avoid any pulls. I use a generic delicates liquid detergent, but if you want to be extra diligent, you could use a specific wool wash formula.
Once washed, make sure you take it out of the machine right away - leaving wool items wet can give them that soggy dog smell. I lay a towel over the top of my clothes drying rack and gently pull the item into shape, letting it dry flat.
Never hang your knits to dry as they will stretch and lose shape, and never ever tumble dry your wool pieces, unless you intend on shrinking them to the size of a puppy jumper.
Finding knits that are 100 per cent wool takes some time because often they are labelled as wool, even if the actual fabric mix is part wool, part something else. So, I’ve done a deep dive to bring you my edit of the best jumpers, knits and cardigans that are made entirely of pure wool.
