1. Mum has brain damage after suffering heart attack while visiting her premature baby.
A young New Zealand mum has been left with brain damage after she suffered a heart attack just two weeks after giving birth.
Kate Meldrum, 29, was left fighting for her life after she suffered a ruptured heart valve and underwent emergency open heart surgery on 21 May.
According to a fundraising page set up for Kate and her family, Kate had been visiting her newborn daughter Ruby Turner in the neonatal intensive care unit at Auckland hospital when it happened.
Ruby was born at just 26.7 weeks on May 6, weighing just 530 grams.
“She has been a little fighter so far and is making her family and friends especially her mum and dad so proud,” the creator of the fundraising page, Gabby Simpson, said.
However, things have only gotten worse for the family, when Kate was confirmed to have suffered brain damage, her sister Steph Everest told Stuff.co.nz.
Steph said that Kate is able to communicate with her family through shakes and nods of her head and asks to see her daughter, who is growing stronger.
“It’s going to be a long journey and we are prepared for that and we’ve had to prepare ourselves for this. It would be nice if she magically wakes up like a fairy tale. Nothing quite works like that unfortunately,” Steph said.
“We just have to hope that they can be the little family they’re meant to be.”

2. Cannot believe people still get bags at the checkout. Does my head in. They last 500 years. Let’s ban plastic packaging altogether and not leave a rubbish tip for future generations.
They come in so handy though!
We have re-usable ones for our weekly shop (and they aren't necessarily the best for the environment either, have to use them for over a year to be environmentally neutral) but for most smaller shops we'll use plastic bags.
If we didn't get plastic bags we would have to buy more bin bags for instance.
I use my plastic bags for many things. Like putting dirty shoes in there, lunch,
Wet swimming clothes, rubbish, etc As do most people i know
500 years Snorks! There will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight by 2050. The planet is drowning in a sea of plastic. The Great Pacific Plastic Garbage Patch is the size of France, Germany and Spain. Where do you think those “handy” plastic bags end up?

I haven’t used plastic bags in years. I never take additional packaging or fancy paper carry bags or tissue wrap of any kind from other stores. There are so many options for small silk or linen or cotton bags that can be folded up and put on a pocket or handbag or left in the car. Take keepcups for your coffee. Use stainless steel straws. Shop at bulk dry goods stores and take your own jars or bags.
We can’t keep doing this and leaving the mess for future generations to solve.

Well, mine end up in the local landfill, which is at least slightly better than the ocean.
I'm not adverse to reducing my plastic, I don't drink coffee and I barely ever use straws, but the 600ml Pepsi Max bottles would be my biggest contribution.
I'm in regional WA, I don't have access to those sorts of stores, except for fruit and veg.
