LEIGH CAMPBELL: 'The $6 highlighter that always gets me compliments.'

The term 'cozzie livs' went viral last year in reference to the increasing cost of living. Because things are expensive right now. Rent. Mortgages. And don't get me started on the price of sliced cheese.

But in times of financial crisis, it's been proven that women still like a little treat. It’s called 'The Lipstick Index' and it was observed and named by Leonard Lauder, of Estée Lauder fame. It’s the term used to describe increased sales of cosmetics during a recession.

This week Erin Docherty wrote about her top 10 makeup products that are under $40, and I clicked so fast on the article. I nodded along as I read her list, and as always, I got FOMO.

So, here are a few of my own cheap (but excellent) makeup faves:

OXX Cosmetics Highlighter Balm in Golden Hour, $6.

I tap a tiny bit of this onto my cheekbones every single day. It gives an amazing glow and I always get comments on how radiant I look. I know you probably think it can't be good for $6, but trust me.

NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil Lip Drip, $20.

I picked this up in a half-price sale, but I'd pay a full 20 bucks for it. It's nourishing like a balm but super shiny like a gloss, BUT, it isn't that kind of sticky finish that traps your hair when it’s windy. It’s heaven.

W7 Lip Culture Soft Satin Lipstick In Naked Desire, $5.

Looking for a lippie that isn't too matte, you can reapply without a mirror, and will give your lips a lovely soft wash of colour? I found it when I was getting a script filled recently and yep, it’s under five bucks.
