Why no one can turn away from the new Bianca Censori and Kanye West story.

There's a story unfolding in the media right now that many people are finding difficult to discuss. 

Because the story of Kanye West (who is now legally known as  "Ye") and his wife Bianca Censori cannot easily be fitted into just one headline.

And yet, the public can't look away from this story.

Everyday gossip websites are flooded with updates of Kanye and Bianca sightings. The paparazzi are following their every move. Her sartorial choices are studied with a keen and concerned eye. They're existing and the whole world is watching.

And waiting, for something to appear.

Much like the intense wave of interest surrounding the marital status of Kate Middleton and Prince William, the public have clutched onto a feeling regarding Kanye and Bianca.

But what the feeling is, and what (if anything) is going on behind closed doors, is something we can't quite put our fingers on.

An overnight love story.

In November, 2020 Melbourne-born Bianca Censori began working for Kanye West's fashion label Yeezy as an architectural designer. Before she started her career she had been studying at the University of Melbourne when she received a DM from the mega-famous rapper who told her to come and work for his brand.

In 2021, West's seven-year marriage to Kim Kardashian came to an end with the reality TV star citing that she barely recognised her husband anymore. His erratic behaviour caught up with him and their divorce was finalised in November, 2022.

Then sometime between her induction at Yeezy HQ and December 2022, Censori and West's relationship turned from professional to something romantic after he released a track called 'Censori Overload', seemingly referencing his infatuation with the young Australian.

At the beginning of 2023 they were spotted in public for the first time which, to many, confirmed their relationship status. West had moved on from Kim and he wasn't shy about showing the public who his new flame was.

However, when marriage rumours started floating around, it came as a shock to everyone given the proximity to his breakup with Kardashian. Nonetheless, it was revealed the pair were legally married on December 20, 2022 just one year after his divorce was finalised.

There was a new Mrs West in town and everyone was scrambling to learn a bit more about who this mystery woman was.

Allegations follow their every move.

In stark contrast to his ex-wife, details surrounding Censori have remained scarce throughout their relationship timeline. Perhaps this is by design, a way for West to remove himself from the intense media attention he received will being married to Kardashian.

In the time they have been together, Censori has largely remained silent. There have been no interviews, no public-facing commentary, and no social media presence.

Except it would appear that by - at least verbally - removing Censori from the conversation it has invited more attention from the media and public.

In November, 2023 rumours started swirling that all was not well between the married couple with some sources going as far as saying Censori's friends had staged an 'intervention' in Australia in an effort to get her to leave West.

"Her friends let her know exactly how they feel, and they told her that she needs to wake the f**k up," a source told Daily Mail.

The source went on to say Censori is "aware of Kanye’s controlling ways" and is "starting to see things from an outside perspective."

Since then all eyes have been on the couple with many pundits claiming her revealing outfits were allegedly the tell-tale signs Censori was in a relationship with a controlling partner.

This March the rumours seemed to ramp up with media sites claiming Censori's mother had flown to the US to "save" her daughter. 

"Bianca's mum had to see for herself after Bianca told her family she has this under control," the source told Daily Mail. "This has been a wonderful opportunity for Alexandra to get to spend time with Bianca and assess the situation for herself."

The visit apparently has come as her family's growing concerns over their daughter's well-being have peaked in recent months.

Rumours consumed in silence.

Let's be honest - Kanye West has always been the topic of conversation and who he dates is nothing new.

But are we digging for a story that isn't really there? This is a tricky one.

As we know, West's mental health has long been a topic covered in the media. In fact, he has previously spoken out about his struggles with bipolar disorder, so it is always essential to tread carefully when it comes to commenting on his behaviour.

At the same time, making statements about Censori's well-being just because of her public appearance is a delicate line to tread as well. Who is to say she doesn't have agency in is simply making sartorial choices that are unique and interesting to her? We just can't make that leap.

But every time West and Censori step outside of the house, they are seen and their relationship is picked apart at face value.

Because, for now, that's all we have.

I can absolutely see why there is commentary and speculation surrounding these two. It is a really distressing time to be a woman. In Australia, it seems like every other week we see a new act of gendered violence claiming the life of an innocent woman being unnecessarily taken. Our hearts are hurting and we are sensitive to every representation of a woman being shown in the media, and aware that what is happening to them behind the scenes could be very different from the public life that they present. 

So yes, perhaps we are looking closely at these stories and making assumptions that are grounded in little more than a feeling. But such is the female experience, we must sit back and pray to be proven wrong.

At the moment we cannot make these assumptions or claims about a celebrity relationship that we only have surface-level knowledge about. For now, until we have definitive facts, we have to be careful about what we say when telling the story of Kanye West and Bianca Censori.
