Listening to the anti-choice zealots over the past few weeks, you would think that every person having an abortion is in a state of trauma and crisis.
But many abortions do not come from a place of crisis at all. In fact, most women who have an abortion are mothers. Women carrying the mental load of the family, juggling career and maternity leave, bearing the physical toll of multiple pregnancies and knowing full well the sleepless nights and 24/7 responsibility that a baby means.
There are also many, many women – myself included – who have had an abortion at a young age because the time was wrong, and then gone on to have children at a later stage in life.
No-one makes the decision to have an abortion lightly. But to imply that this procedure is always the result of a crisis or dilemma doesn’t reflect the reality of the situation.
The reality is you are weighing up whether having another child means that you might lose your job, not be able to afford the rent or mortgage, whether you can finish your education, or simply knowing you are at the end of your capacity with the load you already have. For many of us, choosing an abortion is not a trauma but a huge relief.
What you need to know about abortion in Australia. Post continues after video.

An “anti-choice zealot” is someone who values unborn human life. Check.
But what about the life of that human once it's born?
Many people who are anti-abortion are also against funding to education, health, public housing, social services, basically anything that helps people in need.
You yourself brought up the issue of personal responsibility and taxpayer's money down below. You're not being unfair, but neither is a woman wants personal autonomy.
There are also people who value unborn human life who are NOT against “funding to education, health, public housing, social services, basically anything that helps people in need”. I spend every working minute battling for my clients access to these things, it is extremely stressful and takes a toll on my health. How many abortion advocates can say that? I walk the talk and completely resent being labelled as some kind of uncaring neanderthal who only cares about the unborn child and doesn’t give a shit about the mother. Stop generalising. It is possible to care deeply about both lives and do your best to help. Some of the insults hurled at pro-lifers are despicable and I for one am f*****g over it!
But it is not a human life. Potential, is not actual. It's a pity you didn't value actual BORN human life, ie the woman, more than something with as much 'unborn human life' status as an amoeba.
Well said. They are pro-BIRTH. Not pro-'life'. Because as you said, most couldn't give a stinking dung heap about what happens to the mother and child after the birth. In fact, they'd probably call the woman a dole bludger who sleeps around for Centrelink money. And yes, these are the same type of people who thinks everyone on the dole is a 'bludger'. They all tend to think the same. Pro-birth, then after that, the mother is a slut who shouldn't be on the dole. That is exactly how these hypocrites think.
Well said Jenny! I agree 100% so dissapointing that the bill has been postponed in the upper house. The vocal minority and all that.
The tragedy of this delay being some children may be born and grow up to live a life?
Look, I know you don't understand. How could you? You have never and will never have to face this situation first hand. I am not forcing anyone to to anything they don't want to do, I would appreciate the same in return. Thanks.
But plenty of women also have the same opinion as Les, why bring sex into it?
It is not a child, any more than a single sperm is. Potential, does not equal actual.
