It’s Thursday night. My husband is at work drinks. My daughter is in her bed and I’m in mine, but I’m not asleep.
The door is shut. I’m under the covers in our dark bedroom, lit only by the dim glow of my iPad, its brightness on the lowest possible setting.
The wifi signal is stronger than usual, I think to myself as I open a few tabs so I can switch between my favourite sites. I browse a bit, decide on a category and enter a few key words. How would I like the results arranged? Why, newest to oldest, of course—I was only here last night.
That’s a new one, I mutter to myself as I click at it with an eager index finger. Oh my, it’s huge! I’m waiting for the video to load when suddenly the door handle rattles.
My heart leaps out of my ribcage and hides behind the curtains. I shove the evidence under the sheets and reach for the nearest book on my bedside table, opening it somewhere in the middle.
He turns on the light.
‘Hi!’ I say, going overboard with the enthusiasm. ‘How was your night?’
I needn’t have bothered.
He had already seen the telltale flush in my cheeks. The novel I finished reading last week was upside-down in my hands and there was a strange, blue, luminous rectangle beaming through the doona.
‘Jess, we’ve talked about this.’
‘What?’ I ask, a vain attempt to avoid the subject.
‘Real estate porn,’ he says, soberly. ‘It’s not good for you.’
And I know he’s right.
It started one innocent Saturday morning over toast as a quick check of the market. ‘Babe, you should see this doer-upper!’

Just a different perspective from someone whose house is currently on the market -- I know it's slightly off topic, but it is soul-destroying when stickybeaks come through open houses. We spend so much time and money on making the house look good for inspection - getting up super early, doing the gardens, putting all personal items away, cleaning every inch, buying fresh flowers, removing the family for a couple of hours - and when the real estate agent tells you "eight groups came through but four were only just looking and not currently planning to buy", it KILLS ME. To me it is the HEIGHT of rudeness. To walk through someone's home just to look?!! It's vile and insulting.
Sometimes people say that because they don't want to be hassled by the real estate agent. I know i did when i was looking! Also, one of my work colleagues is looking to buy a house, and wanted to look through a property they saw on the internet. The real estate agent practically wanted their DNA to let them go through - seriously, they wanted to know bank details, what they own on their current home, how long their house has been on the market etc etc, just to do an INSPECTION! Not surprisingly the house they want to look at has been on the market for 9 months and they decided not to inspect! I can imagine the real estate agent telling the vendors - 'oh, i'll only get serious buyers through' but by doing that you do yourself a HUGE disservice. I bought our house when i saw a sign out the front, rang the real estate and he agreed to show me around that day. Couldn't have been more helpful. I liked the house - but also just wanted to buy as i was sick of looking, this fit the bill, was a smooth transaction so voila.
Hang in there!! You'll sell!
