The 2 very specific questions to ask yourself before buying your next hair tool.

Thanks to our brand partner, DYSON

I have a confession to make. Until this week, I’d personally never tried the cult-fave, all-over-social-media Dyson Airwrap™ Multi-Styler.

This may not sound that odd to everyone, but in the context of me hosting Australia’s biggest beauty podcast, You Beauty, plus having worked in social media for as long as I have... well, it’s akin to having a SAHM who has never used an air fryer. Almost as nifty and timesaving a gadget as the Dyson Airwrap™, I hear.

Anyway, back to why I hadn’t tried it. TBH it just looked really fussy and complicated, and I’m not ‘that girl’ who allocates time (I won’t say has time because that’s condescending and annoying — we all prioritise different things) to my hair.

However, once upon a time, a stylist had once used the tool on my hair for my hens. They weren’t even using them at her salon, they were using a regular curling tong, but she took one look at the grim bin chicken strands protruding out of my head and hightailed it to her lunch room, where she fished out her personal Dyson Airwrap™ because she was too scared to put heat on the strands.

It's safe to say, my hair and my hens were fab.

Now cut to a recent event I hosted for Mamamia and Dyson Hair Care.

I rocked up with my hair in my silk sleep scrunchie, hoping to the heavens someone would use their magic wands (read: the Dyson hair tools) to turn my hair from drab to fab. And indeed, they did. You need to see the video of my reaction when I saw my ‘wrapped’ hair. It was THAT gosh darn spectacular. I was a supermodel. I HAD SUPERMODEL HAIR.

But what’s worth noting was how EASY IT WAS.

The stylist made me use the tool on my hair and showed me exactly how to use the different attachments (there are 13 now exclusively available on the Dyson website, and they do a myriad of fab things, catering for every type of hair).

After a faltering start, I damn well nailed it. It’s just practice! Like anything, you’re not going to be a pro at something straight away, but the more times you give it a red hot crack, the better you’ll get. I’m not going to kid myself into thinking I can recreate this fab look because I’m not a professional, but I sure as hell am going to try (after I get my Airwrap™ — it’s now on my EOFY treat wishlist).

So if you’re also adding one to your wishlist (or any hair tool), here are the two things to consider.

What is the cost per use?

I love looking at cost per use because it’s helped me justify many outrageous purchases. But the Dyson Airwrap™ Multi-Styler isn’t outrageous — if you break it down, it’s just smart math.

Say you wash your hair three times per week. That’s about average. And you use the Multi-Styler after each wash to dry and style your hair however you fancy. That’s a total of over 1,500 uses over ten years, around 60 cents per use. 60 CENTS. You can’t even get a bloody Chuppa-Chub for 60 cents these days!

What's also fab about the tool is that it's made with premium materials, meaning that it's built to last.

Which leads to my next point. Weigh your potential purchase up like you would any other investment. What will its return be like? Will it last a total of five minutes or will it stick with you for a lifetime? (With the Dyson, the answer is always the latter, FYI.)

Do I want healthy hair or bin chicken hair?

For as long as hair tools have been available, brands have used crazy high temperatures as a selling point. Because they know we’re all pretty lazy and enjoy quick and convenient tools. The hotter a curling tong, the faster it curls.

But just like turning the oven up to speed something up, the result is a burned mess. All you’re doing is frying your hair, which won’t look good long-term. Instead of the glossy and healthy locks we all yearn for, a few fried strands will be flying around your face.

So, this is where you need to take a close look at the styler's technology and how it actually works on your hair. By doing your research, you're making sure you make the very best choice for your hair.

The Dyson Airwrap™ Multi-Styler uses something called ‘the Coanda effect’, an aerodynamic phenomenon to attract and wrap the hair to the barrel or surface of the brush. Powered by the Dyson digital V9 motor, this method curves the air around the hair to propel hair strands along itself, creating a smooth, desired hair shape. So effectively, they’re using air, not extreme heat, which is far better for our hair health.

Again, SUPERMODEL HAIR. Image: Supplied.

The Dyson Airwrap™ is the only hairstyler to use this smart and science-y sounding innovation. The new and re-engineered attachments also use enhanced Coanda airflow for easier, faster and better styling. Featuring a new barrel to create clockwise and anti-clockwise curls with just one barrel (no more swapping barrels, HURRAH), the rotating cool tip and multi-functional Coanda dryer can be used to pre style my hair in dry mode, but then switched into a smoothing mode to use to remove frizz and fly aways at the last step. Also its great to refresh next day hair!

The smoothing mode also removes frizz and fly aways, meaning that you don't have to feel like a mad scientist on those inevitable bad hair days.

And don’t worry, if you’ve already got the OG Dyson Airwrap™, you don’t need to buy a whole new one; they’re going to sell attachment upgrade kits, which is spectacular.

I learnt so much about the Multi-Styler at the event and recommend you have a look into it because the engineering is fascinating. I met so many fabulous Youbies who got to try the styler and it was so cool to watch — they all had SUCH different hair types (lengths, thickness, texture, colours etc.), and yet they all walked out looking like a dang supermodel!

And there really is no better confidence boost than walking down the street with great hair, absolutely feeling yourself.
